Journeys To The Underworld is a multimedia project by Australian artist and filmmaker Sarah Gibson begun in October, 2013. It explores the underworld as an idea, a place, a metaphor, a dream, a point of view, a myth, a descent and a journey.
The underworld is commonly thought of as the realm of death. However, it is also an otherworld where society and culture consigns all that it rejects, despises and wishes to repress. In this way it is also a metaphor for the unconscious, madness and the imagination.
Drawing on ideas from depth psychology and contemporary culture, Journeys To The Underworld reflects on death and myths and stories of journeys to land of the dead, to return with knowledge about life and creativity.
